The ASI National Structural Steelwork Specification (NSSS) has been updated to include sustainability requirements for all steel procured on projects including the specification of ASI’s new Steel Sustainability Australia (SSA) certification program. Sustainability is not covered in the structural steelwork standard AS/NZS 5131. However, given the increased focus on sustainability in the built environment, the revised specification includes reference to the Green Building Council of Australia-recognised SSA certification program.
The NSSS is applicable to general structural steel framing for buildings and structures. It embeds AS/NZS 5131 requirements in areas including materials used for fabrication, cutting, holing, shaping, welding, bolting, surface preparation, corrosion protection, shop assembly, handling, transport and erection; and architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) and cold formed purlins and girts used in conjunction with structural steelwork.
