Steel Sustainability Australia

Keep up to date

The Steel Sustainability Australia (SSA) certification program is superseding the Australian Steel Institute's (ASI) current Environmental Sustainability Charter (ESC) and will become the new program to certify downstream steel businesses (fabricators, roll formers and reinforcing processors) for sustainable practices across broader ESG sustainability indicators.

The purpose of the development of the Steel Sustainability Australia (SSA) certification program is:

  • to provide a wholistic, through-chain solution to identify sustainable steel suppliers ensuring transparent and consistent measurement of environmental and social impacts of steel products
  • to meet current and future expectations of multi-dimensional sustainability (ESG) within the steel supply chain, including the demand for more sustainable, lower carbon building materials
  • to align with Green Building Council Australia’s (GBCA) recently revised and expanded Green Star rating tool, going from “As Built” to include their Responsible Products Framework (RPF) which focusses on more rigorous social and environmental criteria
  • to support participating suppliers with a program that allows recognition of compliance to these values.

Information on the development of the SSA certification program including the proposed compliance criteria, and key changes from the ESC can be accessed in the below documents. The proposed program has already undergone numerous rounds of consultation and feedback with key industry stakeholders including current ESC members, the Green Building Council of Australia, environmental consultants, engineering firms, steel producers and suppliers.

Important note: The proposed program is subject to change based on consultation with stakeholders.
