The major property of most metals, in particular steel, that sets them apart from other building materials, is their ability to be melted and reused (with only small material losses) without degradation of the base material. This is referred to as Multi Cycling. Nearly all structural steel and most other types of steel are collected for their huge recovery value. Globally this is in the order of 500 million tonnes of steel per year. Based on an article in New Steel Construction, vol. 18, no. 6, June 2010.
