The art of corrosion risk management lies in the workmanship, the key contributor to the success of a coating’s long term performance. This paper describes corrosion, the associated risks, the preventive measures and some of the factors contributing to the coating failures. It presents some examples of coating failures on bridge structures, identifying the factors that may have caused such failures. The paper discusses examples of protective treatment works on some bridge projects wherein the use of the preventive measures, based on the lessons learned on the previous projects, has resulted in the expected outcome in terms of the coating quality.
