This limit states data sheet discusses elastic in-plane buckling in the design of steel pitched roof portal frames and how it may be necessary to amplify the bending moments calculated using a first-order elastic method of analysis. AS 4100 allows this to be done by a method generally requiring use of computer software. A simple approximate method is given here for the hand calculation of the buckling load factor.
