More than 150 people were in attendance for the official opening of the new BlueScope Distribution processing centre at Unanderra NSW on Thursday 12th May. Wollongong Lord Mayor, Gordon Bradbery, performed ribbon cutting duties, in front of a large crowd drawn from across the steel industry and Illawarra business community. The centrepiece of the new processing capability is a MicroStep plasma / oxyfuel plate profiling machine, installed at a cost of approximately $7 million. Further investment is planned for the Unanderra site, as part of the recently announced $217 million Advanced Steel Manufacturing Precinct at Port Kembla. The investment has created 35 new jobs, with more to come as the production ramps up.
