Global principles to harmonise emissions measurement

A global set of principles recognising the need to harmonise methodologies for measuring GHG emissions for steel products has been endorsed by the ASI and steel companies and associations around the world.

The Steel Standards Principles set out a foundation to establish common methodologies for measuring greenhouse gas emissions within the iron and steel sector. Developed by the International Energy Agency (IEA), World Trade Organisation (WTO), ResponsibleSteel, and the Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI), the principles have been signed by around 40 organisations including the ASI.

A related whitepaper, Driving consistency in the greenhouse gas accounting system: A pathway to harmonized standards for steel, cement, and concrete, sets out the rationale for harmonising standards, detailed proposals to help tackle key emissions accounting issues, and charts a pathway to implementation and institutionalisation of the work. The proposals will be discussed and addressed through working groups in 2024 and beyond.
