Library Terms & Conditions

Access to the Member Library of the Australian Steel Institute (ASI) is available to all financial Members of ASI.

Requesting library loans

Library loans can be requested via the online library request form or by contacting the Librarian directly by phone or email. Library loans may not be obtained on behalf of any other person unless this person is also a Member of the ASI. The Member under whose name the library item is obtained is the person responsible for observing Library Loan conditions below.

Copyright

The Member must observe copyright regulations in respect of library items provided by the ASI Member Library.

Hardcopy loans

Hardcopy loans are available to all financial ASI Members except for students on the free Student membership. Certain types of hardcopies contained in the library are not available for loan – these include among others, Australian Standards, books from the Reference Collection and full conference proceedings.

Hardcopy loans are subject to the following conditions:

  • Loan duration: The normal library loan duration is two weeks, but at the discretion of the Librarian, certain library items may only be borrowed for a one-week period without renewal.
  • Confirmation of postal address: The borrower will be asked to confirm their postal address before the library item can be despatched.
  • Renewals: The Librarian can extend the loan duration of a library item for a further two weeks when requested, if the item has not been reserved by another Member.
  • Method of return: The library item must be returned promptly at the end of the loan period by tracked express mail to the ASI PO Box address provided, or personally delivered to the ASI Head Office, NSW.
  • Lost or damaged library items: The Member is responsible for the safe return of the library item in the condition in which it was sent. If the borrowed library item is not safely returned to the ASI Library, or has been damaged, then the Member undertakes to reimburse the ASI for the value of the library item.
  • The Librarian reserves the right not to loan out certain library items, this may be for a number of reasons including the publication being difficult to replace if it goes missing.
  • Where the item is an ASI publication, users will be directed to the ASI bookshop.

Digital loans

Journal articles and conference papers that can be scanned to PDF under the Fair Dealing provision of the Copyright Act, can be emailed to Members. A Copyright declaration is sent to the Member at the same time.
