Further information for individual memberships

Individuals

Individual membership is available to all individuals interested in the use of steel but who fall outside the other categories of membership. 

  • Individual membership runs from July of one year to June of the next.
  • Pro rata fees are not offered.
  • Individuals must have a valid Australian address at the time of registration and membership is not open to residents outside of Australia. All Individual Memberships will be reviewed at the time of registration. Membership may be cancelled if you cannot provide proof of residency in Australia and you may forfeit your membership fee.
  • It is preferred that generic emails are not used for Individual membership but are specific to the individual named in the application. Membership may be cancelled if the login is shared amongst other people.
  • Once you have registered and paid online for ASI Individual Membership you will gain full member access to all Resources and access to the ASI Member Area. You will also receive member discounted prices for purchases in the bookshop, ASI events and eLearning modules.  The activation of your membership is automated and only takes a brief few minutes from the time of purchase.
  • Member benefits are not transferable.
  • Member discount is applicable to the purchase of one copy only of each publication in the ASI Bookshop.
  • When registering for an ASI event, member discount applies to registering a place for the individual member only and may not be transferred to anyone else.
  • Each individual member is entitled to receive one copy of each issue of steel Australia and the Steel Construction journal.

Students

Must be studying full time

ASI offers free online membership to full-time students studying Bachelor degrees in engineering, construction or architecture and enrolled in universities in Australia or diploma courses at TAFEs in Australia.

  • You must upload proof of full-time study. Acceptable proof includes: current transcript; screenshot of full-time study workload or letter of enrolment which clearly identifies you and full time study load.  Please note Student ID card, drivers' licence, invoices or correspondence more than 12 months old is not accepted.  Your application will not be processed unless you have the correct proof of full-time study.
  • Once you have registered online for ASI Student Membership, you go through a brief approval process after which you gain access to the ASI Member Area. This approval process may take a few working days. Free ASI Student Membership is for a maximum of five years and is available to full-time students only.
  • Student membership does not apply for anyone studying part time, studying a Masters or working in a paid internship as part of their course.
  • Membership includes free access to all digital resources of the ASI eLibrary, including the dedicated Student Resources section. The section provides comprehensive information on structural steel, including an overview of steelmaking and the steel supply chain, the fabrication and erection of steel, and video clips on Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel.
  • Student members are not able to borrow hard copy books from the library on loan.
  • An ASI Student Member can also purchase one hard copy of the latest edition of the Design capacity tables for structural steel, Vol 1: Open sections for almost 50% discount on the full price. 
  • Member discount is applicable to the purchase of one copy only of each publication in the ASI Bookshop
  • When registering for an ASI event, member discount applies to registering a place for the student member only and may not be transferred to anyone else.
  • The Australian Steel Institute is an internationally respected organisation with extensive contacts throughout the building and construction industry in Australia and overseas. Being a part of the ASI enables you to keep in touch with the latest developments in steel design and construction.
  • We are serious about supporting students. Our State Managers provide lectures to students on the practical applications of structural steel. We also provide lecturers with resources for teaching purposes and present awards to the top third year civil/structural engineering students.

Academics

Lecturers, Professors and teaching staff only

Free Academic membership is available to lecturers in engineering, architecture or construction at an Australian university and/or TAFE college offering courses that further the steel industry as part of its curriculum.

  • Academic members can benefit from the library service for teaching aids and assistance with guest lectures from State Managers as required. 
  • This free membership does not apply to casuals and is approved at ASI's discretion.
  • Once you have registered online for ASI Academic Membership, you go through a brief approval process after which you gain access to the ASI Member Area. This approval process may take a few working days.
  • Academic member benefits are not transferable.
  • Member discount is applicable to the purchase of one copy only of each publication in the ASI Bookshop.
  • When registering for an ASI event, member discount applies to registering a place for the academic member only and may not be transferred to anyone else.

Academic Library

For Australian academic libraries wishing to subscribe to steel Australia magazine and the Steel Construction journal in hard copy

  • Receive the quarterly Steel Australia magazine in hard copy
  • Receive the Steel Construction journal in hard copy
  • Gain an individual eLibrary login for the librarian
  • Academic librarian will receive a discount on the purchase of books from the ASI bookshop.
  • Once you have registered online for ASI Academic Library Subscription, you go through a brief approval process after which you gain access to the ASI Member Area. This approval process may take a few working days.
  • This subscription runs from July of the one year to June of the next.
  • Pro rata fees are not offered.
