ASI campaign on imported fabricated steelwork

ASI prepares to initiate trade action to combat import surge

In recognition of the significant damage being caused to the local steel fabrication industry by the surge in very low-priced fabricated steelwork, the ASI Board has determined that this issue is so serious as to warrant the initiation of a trade action on behalf of members.

After engaging extensively with the Federal Government ministers and senior public servants during 2024 to explore the available trade measure options, a Safeguard measure has been identified as the preferred approach. The ASI has engaged a team of expert international consultants with experience of Safeguards, to advise on the drafting of the application.

ASI chief executive Mark Cain observed that whilst we rightly speak primarily about the steel fabricators who are bearing the brunt of the crisis, it is also having a big impact on the viability of the complete steel value chain. "Everyone that provides goods or services to support local steel fabrication – beams & columns, plate, processing, galvanizing, design, detailing – everyone is missing out, and it is really hurting our local industry and resulting in a loss of jobs and the capability to make things in Australia”, Cain said. “We are doing everything we can to address the problem, and bring some relief to our members.” This web page will keep ASI members up to date on the campaign and how we are helping minimise the impact of the surge on YOUR business.
