Understanding the corrosion rate of structural steel

This article by Rob Francis considers various issues associated with corrosion of steel in the atmosphere, including the process of steel corrosion, standards describing atmospheric corrosivity, how they can be used and atmospheric corrosivity zones in Australia. A number of related aspects affect corrosion rate. Some design features can modify the environment so it is important to understand their effect on corrosion rates. Weathering steels show improved corrosion resistance, but behaviour is not always straight forward. Marine steel piling shows different corrosion behaviour again which does not always follow the relevant standards. Finally, the effect of paint coatings on steel durability is briefly described.
