The National Structural Steelwork Specification and Standard Drawing Notes

The National Structural Steelwork Specification and Standard Drawing Notes

The publication of the new Australian Standard AS/NZS 5131 ‘Structural steelwork – Fabrication and erection’ provides a rational fit-for-purpose definition of ‘good practice’ that is transparent and aligned internationally. It also provides a solid technical foundation for creation of project specifications and, significantly, for developing a national structural steelwork specification.

This paper details the initiative by ASI to create the ‘National Structural Steelwork Specification’ (NSSS) and associated ‘Standard Drawing Notes’ and examines the benefits to stakeholders and structural steelwork project supply in Australia. The paper also provides guidance to engineers and specifiers on how to implement the project-specific choices and risk-based approach in AS/NZS 5131 that are reflected in the NSSS.
