This paper examines the initiative by the Australian Steel Institute to underwrite development of the new Australian Standard AS/NZS 5131 ‘Structural Steelwork – Fabrication and Erection’, the new ‘National Structural Steelwork Specification (NSSS) and the National Structural Steelwork Compliance Scheme (NSSCS) as a rational practical risk mitigation strategy for engineers and the Australian community. Importantly, the paper provides guidance to engineers on how to implement the risk-based approach in the new Standard. In: AustRoads Bridge Conference 2017.
