Bolts in fatigue critical joints. Basic principles to avoid failures

Bolts in fatigue critical joints. Basic principles to avoid failures

Fatigue of bolted connections is not well understood and yet for connected parts in applications subjected to severe cyclic loading conditions, it is critical that the bolted joint is properly designed and constructed so as to avoid fatigue failure. Our steel structures Standard AS 4100 provides little guidance to engineers on assessing fatigue performance of bolts and bolted connections.

The objective of this technical paper by John Alden is to discuss some very basic principles related to the fatigue behaviour of bolted joints to assist engineers involved in the design and construction of equipment and structures incorporating such joints.
