Tubular structures in architecture

This book, a CIDECT initiative, is concerned with designing tubular structures from an architect's perspective. It is richly illustrated and contains many case studies, several of which the author was personally involved in. The case studies highlight many issues experienced and lessons learnt in the development of new techniques and building forms.

Grouped under the main headings of architectonic, constructional, structural and industrial design, the proposition is made that good design requires vision and the integration of all four concepts. It deals with the essential issue of how the building envelope, often glass, is attached to the structural form. It also discusses the development of free formed buildings and the need for promoting mutual trust between the collaborating parties, not always possible using traditional tendering methods.
