The winning projects in the 2014 Steel Excellence Awards attest to the wide array of building and construction applications which the metal is proving its mettle ranging from a regional penal complex, a modest trestle supported holiday abode and a major sports stadium, it was announced at a cocktail event at the Perth Cultural Centre on 25 July. The West Kimberley Regional Prison project which encompassed 55 buildings and posts forming the perimeter security fence topped the Buildings - Large Projects category. The Nannup Holiday House which used economical steel sections for structural support, sun-shading and façade cladding won in Buildings - Small Projects. And the Perth Stadium redevelopment which used steel extensively in the new eastern and southern stands to increase overall capacity to 20,500 fans commanded the top accolade in the Engineering Projects category. All three will go on to vie for national honours in their respective categories with the winners to be announced at the Steel Convention this September.
