An array of cleverly functional educational and industrial workplaces topped Queensland’s Steel Excellence Awards for 2014 it was announced at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 8 August. Australia’s first carbon-neutral building at the University of Queensland, the Global Change Institute won in the Large Building Projects category. ASI member, Brezac Construction’s new fabrication facility designed for efficient production throughput topped the Small Building Projects category. A harlequin patterned façade that effectively stabilises internal temperatures won in Steel Clad Structures for St Peters Lutheran College Performing Arts Centre, whilst a steel-based design that enabled an almost free-standing liner to be installed taking loads away from the main plant structure as part of the Mount Isa Crude Ore Bin Refurbishment took out the top spot in Engineering Projects. All four projects go on to vie for national honours in their respective categories being announced mid September at the Australian Steel Convention Gala Dinner.
