A striking array of recreational and youth-orientated facilities topped the latest round of the ASI’s biennial Steel Excellence Awards for NSW and ACT presented at Doltone House Hyde Park on Friday, 18 July with the winning projects going on to vie for top spot in each category at the national awards to be announced at the Steel Convention this September. A lightweight enclosure installed atop a continuously operating casino (Star Casino Event Centre) won the Large Building Projects category whilst a mostly steel structure located in regional NSW botanical gardens (AGL Lakeside Pavilion) garnered top honour in Small Building Projects. The refurbishment of the world’s steepest railway in the Blue Mountains (Scenic Railway, Katoomba) won in the Engineering Projects category and a corrosion-neutral weathering steel façade wrapping a student housing block (IGLU Student Housing) got the Steel Clad Structures gong. Guy Hollingum from Arup was recognised on the night with the Young Designer Award for his work on the North Shore Hospital redevelopment.
