The ASI has welcomed the Rudd Government’s 1 September announcement on establishing a National Resource Sector Employment Taskforce to help secure the skilled workers required to build and operate major resource sector projects over the coming decade.

ASI Chief Executive, Don McDonald said it is encouraging that the Government has taken a proactive step in identifying the need to boost the local skilled workforce to play a major part in the building and operating of the many major projects that are on the drawing boards. “The move bodes well for keeping local skill levels up to par to meet the demands of future large-scale development projects,” Mr McDonald said. “It should also help ensure that Australian steel industry skills built up during the recent resources boom are not lost.” He said the initiative also sits well with work by a number of ASI members which have been busy investing in new plant capacity and capability during the current lull in workloads. “We look forward to supporting the Federal Employment Minister’s efforts in creating the new Taskforce and working with it as appropriate to create and preserve precious local skills.”
