North Queensland steel businesses have pooled to compete stronger with global supply chains on Australia’s larger mining and building projects. Launched in Townsville on 29 October, the joint venture company Australian Steel Fabricators (ASF) responds to rapidly expanding requirements for large quantity, high quality steelwork sourced close to projects. The group was formed under the JV template promoted by the ASI and Australian Steel Supplier Advocate, Dennis O’Neill. ASF amasses over 100 years of industry experience, including ASI members Cairns Steel Fabricators and Thomas Steel Fabrication as well as Australian Professional Galvanizing, Totalfab Engineering Services and Industrial Laser Cutting. “ASF enables the participating companies with the ability to complete 2000-tonne projects individually to have the opportunity to be involved in projects up to 10,000 tonnes which have traditionally been out of their reach,” said Cairns Steel Fabricators’ Managing Director, Sean Adams. “It will also assist in maintaining manufacturing in regional Australia which I believe is critical for the longevity of our industry,” he said. Under ASF’s consolidated structure, a single project manager will allocate roles and responsibilities based on a job’s specific requirements and capacity within the group.
