During 2021, as an integral part of our sustainability charter, we will be rolling out the Green Building Council of Australia’s (GBCA) New Green Star framework, and we need your help to make sure we make the most of the new opportunities this brings.

The New Green Star developments will bring some significant changes to how building products will be recognised in the ESC program. The changes include a new credit scoring framework tool known as the Responsible Products Framework, which will provide a significantly greater number of available Green Star credit points leveraging global best practice relating to Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

We have created a short (5-10 min) survey, to determine which of these initiatives, which are all linked to Green Star credit points, will be of greatest interest for your company to participate in. This short survey closes by COB on Friday 12 February 2021.

Sustainability in Buildings is going through significant transformation and steel has a vital role to play.  Our ESC Charter members who wish to demonstrate their strong sustainability credentials will have a fantastic opportunity to provide a greater number of Green Star credit points to their clients, whilst showcasing their Environmental-Social-Governance business brand to their customers, further leveraging competitive advantage in the market.

Further Information

The ASI has been a strong advocate of the principles of sustainability and created the Environmental Sustainability Charter (ESC) approximately 10 years ago as part of an overarching program of steel stewardship, which seeks to engage the entire steel supply chain in adopting best practice sustainability behaviour. The ESC is conducted in partnership with the Green Building Council of Australia’s (GBCA) very popular Green Star program, and enables members to access Green Star credit points for building and construction projects whilst driving environmental sustainability improvements across members business operations.  The ESC is directed at downstream steel manufacturers, fabricators, rollformers, reinforcing steel processors and resellers who are an integral part of the entire steel supply chain.

New Green Star’s Responsible Products Framework has the intention of recognising highly valuable sustainability efforts and results of your business based on four key principles:

  1. Responsibility – the manufacturing / fabrication processes avoids significant environmental impacts.
  2. Transparency – product impacts and content are transparent and meet high standards.
  3. Stewardship – the product supply chain is operated ethically, respecting human rights and lower environmental impact.
  4. Foresight – the organisation is preparing for lower carbon production and the circular economy.
