Australia’s first dedicated sustainable steel awards program is still open for entries.

The awards are hosted by the ASI to recognise and encourage exemplary applications of Australian steel as a sustainable material. The awards will be presented to winners on 20 November at the Australian Steel Convention in Sydney.

The two award categories are Sustainable Work Practices in the Steel Industry (Reducing Steel’s Footprint) and Developing Sustainable Products and Solutions (Turning Sustainability into Reality). The former will showcase energy reductions, water minimisation, capture and use, waste minimisation and recycling. The latter will deal with demountability and reuse, adaptability, recyclability, material minimisation, site waste minimization, design for longer life and ease of retrofit.

Prizes encompass tickets to the Steel Convention to receive the award including accommodation and airfare, a mounted and framed award and promotion in ASI publications and media releases. All complying entrants will receive participation certificates. Entries must be submitted to the ASI by 5.00pm Friday, 23 October 2009.
