The ASI has appointed Arup Principal, Tristram Carfrae and Regional Construction Director of Brookfield Multiplex Constructions, Alison Mirams to its Board of Directors.

Mr Carfrae is most widely recognised as the managing structural engineer behind the design of Beijing’s National Aquatics Centre for the 2008 Olympics, known as the ‘Water Cube’, as well as an impressive portfolio of facilities created for the 2000 Sydney Olympics and Singapore Expo. He has collaborated with many of the world’s leading architects, including Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers and Philip Cox, on projects where the structural form is itself an aesthetic statement and has helped design six structures that have won Special Awards from the Institute of Structural Engineers, unique for a structural engineer for the world’s premier structural accolade. He is also member of the global Arup Group Board, Chair of the Global Buildings Board, is one of nine Arup Fellows (out of a global staff of 9000) and has been named one of Australia’s Top 100 most influential engineers every year since 2004. During the past 10 years with Brookfield Multiplex, Alison Mirams progressed from contracts administrator through to Contracts Manager for several high profile projects to her current role as Regional Construction Director evaluating potential projects and providing commercial input into buildings’ conversions. In 2005, she received the National Association of Women in Construction Award for Achievement in Construction, the same year becoming Commercial Manager at Brookfield Multiplex, integral in negotiating through the pricing phase of the American Express and Macquarie Bank buildings at King Street Wharf in Sydney’s CBD. ASI Chief Executive, Don McDonald welcomed the Board’s decision on the appointments as helping to bolster the Institute’s appreciation of current property sector issues. “Over recent years, structural steel’s share of high-rise construction has risen from about three to 13 percent so its more important than ever to ensure our members are well appraised of new developments in that sector. The new directors are well placed to convey those insights,” he said.
