Design and fabrication of steel structures - The new risk-based approach - Orange, NSW

Struc steel imageThe new Australian Standard AS 5131 Structural steelwork - Fabrication and erection published in late 2016 requires engineers to specify a steel fabrication Construction Category in their project specifications. The Construction Category establishes the correct level of quality and assurance controls to ensure the structure meets the engineer’s design assumptions and level of risk mitigation under obligations implicit in the Workplace Health & Safety Act. The fabricator must have the processes in place to satisfy the specific Construction Category.

The presentation will include some of the problem areas experienced by engineers, fabricators and procurers when dealing with non-compliant structural steelwork and the solutions provided by AS 5131 and the new ASI National Structural Steelwork Compliance Scheme (NSSCS). The new National Structural Steelwork Specification (NSSS), which is designed to be a straightforward implementation tool for AS/NZS5131, will also be discussed.

The seminar will be presented by those most closely involved with Australia’s first third-party certification scheme for structural steelwork.
