ASI Committees (2009)
National Committees
National & State Local Content Committees These committees aim to maximize the Australian Industry fabricated content in the four priority sectors of: Engineering Projects (Mining, Oil & Gas, Desalination, Pulp Mills, etc.); Industrial & Commercial Buildings; Infrastructure Projects (Government and private funded, Roads, Bridges, Power Plants, etc.); Other major tonnes affecting ASI members (Guardrails, Wind Towers, Piling, etc). This will be achieved through specific project and industry awareness and influencing of owners, decision makers and key influencers, to use locally fabricated product, thereby reducing the amount of imported fabricated steel in the Australian market by: a) Developing an accurate understanding of the changing nature of the market and why people use imported fabricated steel. b) Determine how and where the Australian industry can be competitive and can deliver. c) Develop, promote and sell the local content value proposition.
National Pipe and Tube Committee The Committee aims to foster more productive relationships with specification and regulatory bodies, strives to understand the relative importance/performance needs of each market segment for steel pipe and tube, improve product identification to help specifiers do their job, and to be recognised as supporting the Australian manufacturing/fabrication industry. The Committee’s success is indicated by how much Australian specifications are known by distributors and apt end users, sales of Australian pipe and tube grow and that products in the marketplace are ‘fit for purpose’ to Australian specification.
National Health & Safety Committee The Committee aims to cultivate a healthier and safer steel industry through promotion, education support. Its core principles are that all injuries and work-related illnesses can and must be prevented, management is responsible and accountable for health and safety performance, employee engagement and training is essential, working safely is a right of employment, excellent health and safety performance at work supports excellent business results and that health and safety must be integrated in all business management processes to bolster that. All relevant workplace safety information held by the State safety committees is directed to the Group.
National Fabrication Forum
The Committee aims to generate a stronger, more profitable and internationally competitive Australian steel fabrication industry. It strives for this by providing a forum to discuss and resolve issues affecting fabricators nationally and a platform for voicing their position to greater industry providing a national voice to influence government, industry and key decision makers for the benefit of all fabricators.
Beyond2 Marketing Committee
The Committee aims to influence the construction industry to choose structural steel building solutions. This is to be achieved through influencing specifiers in multi-storey projects to consider a composite construction method from the outset, instill its cost and logistical advantages over other building materials with the key building and construction decision makers and help guide the Australian steel fabrication industry on ways to improve their competitive offer. It also promotes the Steel Contractor model as a turnkey approach to include all trades involved in multi-storey construction including fire, paint, decking and erection. This work is undertaken within a marketing framework educating fabricators on leading design tools and a ‘new steel technology’ to be more competitive whilst upgrading the marketing effort to those with influence over structural steel specification and procurement.
Steel Shed Group
The Group promotes Australian manufactured steel products used in construction of cold-formed shed structures, like sheds and garages and promotes steel shed industry compliance in the design, supply and construction principally of those types of structures. This is achieved by pursuing portable building compliance with Australian Standards (Building Code of Australia) and developing documentation formats that conform to local government and certifier requirements. Achieving industry compliance is linked to improving the credibility and sustainability of the industry.
Sustainability Committee
The Group aims to positively differentiate steel in sustainable construction through influencing perceptions of steel and the treatment of steel by various sustainability tools/regulatory bodies so that steel is not disadvantaged in the debate. This is pursued through lifting awareness of how sustainability metrics should be applied and relative importance in overall sustainable design, seeking to improve the performance of steel in terms of sustainability, attaining better understanding of current performance (in differing applications) and identifying improved steel solutions for different applications. The Group provides strategic direction, information on steel’s environmental credentials to customers and other parties, participates in development of government policy and regulation and promotes improved steel product credentials.
National Sheet & Coil Sub Committee
The sub-committee aims to provide an industry forum for the discussion of any relevant issues concerning the sheet and coil product market and to encourage and foster ‘industry health’ in that sector. The group does this through providing intra-association communication and to give specific direction to State sheet and coil sub-committees, apar from issues related to competition (including competition between ASI members), ASI member pricing policies and/or individual distributor relationships.
National Local Content Group The group coordinates the work of the State-based Local Content Working Groups, informs them on overall policy direction and drives overall advocacy efforts. It also liaises at Federal level with relevant Australian Government department and national bodies, such as the Steel Industry Innovation Council and the Steel Strategy Group of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.
