New leaf to green gongs
The ASI has added a new and third category to its annual Sustainable Steel Awards open for entries to recognise excellence in Design using Australian steel as a construction material.
The new award category is most apt for engineers, architects or steel detailers for design that incorporates innovative environmental improvements using steel as the prime structural material. The ASI Sustainability Group which organises the award scheme encourages entries that demonstrate ‘future proofing’ to facilitate longer, more flexible life of built assets, material minimisation through astute design, as well as demountability and economic reuse of materials. The other two award categories open for entries cover Process and Product areas. The Sustainable Work Practices (Process) category is most suited to those in manufacturing, steel fabrication or ancillary services like galvanising and protective coating to showcase exceptional examples of sustainable work practices. Entries should demonstrate energy reductions, water reduction, capture and use, waste minimisation, and recycling. The Sustainable Products and Solutions category is mostly for those working specifically in manufacturing or fabrication who have recently developed sustainable products or building solutions that deliver a verifiable sustainable advantage for the end-user. All 2009 entries are profiled on an interactive document available for download from the Sustainability section of the ASI website at www.steel.org.au,.as are the 2010 award guidelines and entry forms. The closing date for entries is 31 August.
