ASI ‘Beyond2’- Steel in Buildings, Marketing Committee Report.

Targeted as a growth area for steel by the ASI board this market sector has been the focus of the ASI Marketing Committee for some years. This committee has representation from the Steel companies, Fabricators, and Builders.

Its mission and vision are as follows:

  • Mission: 
    To grow the market for steel in multi storey buildings.
  • Vision:
    To influence the market so that steel is considered equally in the decision making process as a framing material for multi storey buildings.
    To ensure through provision of technical tools and training that the steel alternative is easy to design
    By the provision of data and examples on current cost and speed of construction, that the steel alternative is selected on its merits.
    And by the communication of case studies that steel framing and decking is considered a familiar and competitive alternative framing and flooring material.

Recently as part of the ASI AusIndustry ICIP grant an independent survey was undertaken of the current ‘Attitudes and Perceptions’ of steel in multi level buildings.  This survey has said four significant things:

1. We have a long way to go to reach our vision but at the same time we have made significant inroads in growing the market for steel in buildings.  (We have added 25,000 tonnes approx. into the fabrication market for steel.)
2. The ASI is seen as the peak steel industry association and is well recognised by the building industry as the ‘spokes-association’ for steel.
3. The offer of the ASI co-ordinating a steel industry approach to mount a case for steel as a free service for engineers, builders and developers is not fully understood by the market and needs to be communicated.
4. The greatest hurdle for builders in choosing steel is in difficulties in handling the fire requirements and this is the greatest area that the ASI can make an impact.

Given this the Beyond2 marketing committee is in the process of forming a fire sub-group to address the issues raised and to provide clarity and certainty in the assessment of fire protection costs for a steel building.
